In order to meet future needs, the Association de la Communes de la Veveyse has decided to transform and enlarge the Cycle d’Orientation in Châtel St. Denis that is located in an area just north of the city center.
The Cycle d’Orientation de la Veveyse complex includes three building units. The first two lying south were inaugurated in 1973 and house second and third year secondary education classrooms, as well as the sports facilities (a building situated in the center of the school complex). The Univers@alle complex built in 2001 lies north of these buildings and is not within the scope of the present tender.
The specifications governing the invitation to tender are aimed at restructuring and expanding the building in the south that houses the classrooms. The classrooms will increase from 21 to 27 and the building needs to accommodate a public library, a media center, and a career counseling and planning center.
Facility and surface requirements are met by renovating and raising the existing Cycle d’Orientation building, expanding it northwards with a two-storycantilevered attachment that extends for 35 meters and is 6.5 meters off the ground, supported at the end by a stairway that is enclosed by leaning pilotis.
This solution creates a courtyard opposite the atrium with an overhead skylight that extends from the skylight in the atrium where a stairway has been incorporated to connect all the various levels to this luminous, glass volume that reflects inside/outside qualities and becomes the heart of the entire body.
The project, which rationalizes and legibly responds to all the criteria in the tender guidelines with a clear and simple building type concept, defines a volume that balances the relationships between the existing building units and maintains unobstructed views of the site upon the city of Châtel St. Denis.
